How to Remove Salt Stains from Your Car Interior (Ottawa Winter Guide)

To remove salt stains from a car interior, mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water, apply it to the stained area, agitate with a stiff brush, and extract or blot clean. For salt that's been sitting in carpet fibres all winter, professional hot water extraction is the most effective method — it dissolves the salt crystals and pulls them completely out of the fibres in a way that home methods can't fully replicate.
Why Ottawa Winters Are Especially Hard on Car Interiors
The City of Ottawa applies road salt aggressively on all major roads from roughly November through March — sometimes into April depending on the year. Strandherd Drive, Bank Street, the Queensway, Merivale, and hundreds of other roads get salted repeatedly throughout winter.
Every time you get into your vehicle in winter, you're tracking salt in on your boots. It starts as a dissolved salt solution in the slush on your footwear, soaks into the carpet fibres, and as the moisture evaporates, the white salt crystals are left behind. By February or March, most Ottawa vehicles have weeks or months of accumulated salt embedded in the floor mat fibres, the carpet beneath them, and the carpet in the back seat area.
The problem isn't just cosmetic. Salt is hygroscopic — it draws and holds moisture. Over time, persistent salt and moisture in carpet fibres creates conditions for mold and mildew growth underneath the carpet, particularly if the vehicle has poor ventilation or the carpet stays damp. It also accelerates wear and breakdown of the carpet fibres themselves.
DIY Method: How to Remove Salt Stains from Car Carpet
This method works well for moderate salt staining. You'll need white vinegar, warm water, a spray bottle, a stiff-bristled brush, and clean microfiber cloths or a wet-dry vacuum.
Step 1: Vacuum First
Before you introduce any liquid, thoroughly vacuum the area to remove loose salt crystals, dirt, and debris. Use a crevice tool to get into the edges of the floor mats and the carpet seams. This prevents you from turning dry salt into a wet mess unnecessarily.
Step 2: Mix Your Cleaning Solution
Combine equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. Vinegar is a mild acid that dissolves the alkaline salt crystals without damaging carpet fibres. Do not use bleach, ammonia, or anything with harsh chemicals — these damage carpet fibres and can cause permanent discolouration.
Step 3: Apply and Agitate
Spray the solution generously onto the salt-stained area and let it sit for 1–2 minutes. Then use a stiff brush to work it into the carpet fibres using circular motions. You'll often see the white residue start to lift and dissolve. Work in sections rather than soaking the entire carpet at once.
Step 4: Extract or Blot
If you have a wet-dry vacuum, use it to extract the solution and dissolved salt from the carpet. This is significantly more effective than blotting — the suction pulls the dissolved salt out of the fibres rather than just moving it around. If you're blotting with cloths, use clean sections of cloth and work from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading it.
Step 5: Repeat if Needed
Severe or long-standing salt staining may require 2–3 passes. Let the area dry between applications if possible, and re-evaluate before continuing.
Step 6: Dry Thoroughly
Leave windows cracked or run the heater to dry the carpet completely. Wet carpet left in a closed vehicle overnight is how you end up with mildew problems that are harder to fix than the original salt staining.
When DIY Isn't Enough: Professional Hot Water Extraction
For vehicles with multiple months of salt accumulation — the typical Ottawa spring situation — DIY methods usually improve the appearance but don't fully eliminate the problem. The salt has penetrated deep into the carpet fibres and the padding beneath them, and vinegar and a brush can only reach so far.
Professional hot water extraction uses heated water injected into the carpet at pressure, combined with strong suction to immediately extract it. The hot water dissolves salt crystals far more effectively than cold or room-temperature water, and the extraction pressure pulls them out of the fibre structure completely.
When we do a spring interior detail on an Ottawa vehicle that's had a full winter of use, the extraction water that comes out of even a "clean-looking" carpet is often visibly brown or grey with dissolved road contamination. What looked reasonably clean was actually quite dirty at the fibre level.
If your vehicle's carpet has visible white salt staining across the floor mats and carpet, or if there's a musty smell developing, it's worth booking a professional interior detail. A proper extraction job on a full-size sedan takes 2–3 hours. The difference is immediately noticeable.
Preventing Salt Damage During Winter
The best approach is prevention. Here's what actually helps:
- All-weather rubber floor mats — these are the single most effective way to protect your carpet. WeatherTech, Husky Liner, and similar brands make vehicle-specific mats that contain most of the salt and slush on your footwear. They're far easier to clean than carpet.
- Clean your mats regularly — take rubber mats out and rinse them every 2–3 weeks in winter. Takes 5 minutes and prevents the buildup from spreading to the carpet beneath.
- Wipe boots before entering — simple but effective. A boot scraper outside your garage door and a quick wipe on a mat at the door entry reduces how much salt gets tracked in.
- Mid-winter interior clean — even a basic vacuum and wipe-down in January or February prevents salt from being ground deeper into the fibres over the second half of winter.
